Emilie Desforges

My ski season starts in May and ends in April. During this period, I have physical training camps and ski camps and finally it's the competition season. We are always travelling which limits the rest and healing periods.

It is always with pleasure that I get back home knowing that there are specialists who can help me at any time.

Thank you for fast and professional care for osteopathy, physiotherapy and sports therapy from your teams of West Island and Mont-Tremblant.

TWO CANADIAN FIRSTS IN NOR AM ACTION

Emilie Desforges and Julien Cousineau record their first Nor Am titles

Canada struck gold at Nor Am races on both sides of the border, Thursday, as Montreal’s Emilie Desforges and Lachute, Que., native Julien Cousineau both skied to their first-ever Nor Am Cup victories.

It was at the CIBC Coupe Nor Am Cup event at Mont-Garceau, Que., that Desforges skied a great second run of 53:00 to finish first on the podium in the women’s giant slalom – much to the delight of her family, who was in attendance.

"I’m so happy with my result of today,” said Desforges. “I came within an ace of a catastrophe many times during the second run. The course was very fast and if you were loosing your line, you were falling behind. I took off too fast at the top and once in the compression, I was too much in the back, but I still managed to keep the rhythm."

With a total time of 1 minute, 45:79, Ashley Linda Spina of the U.S. finished second for her first Nor Am podium and her best result to-date. Sophie Splawinski, also of Montréal, finished third with a total time of 1:45.84 to end the day with two Canadians on the podium. In fact, eight of the top-15 finishers were Canadian.

South of the border at the Sunday River Ski Area in Maine another young Canadian started the new year with a bang as Julien Cousineau took the Nor Am giant slalom title with a time of 2 minutes, 25.74.

“I was going smooth in the first run without making too many errors, but I really attacked for the second run,” said Cousineau, who turns 22 on January 17th. “I had nothing to lose. This victory feels good.”

Last year, Cousineau missed earning a World Cup giant slalom bib by 1/100th of a second when he placed second to American Chip Knight in the final Nor Am race of the season. Cousineau wants to make sure that doesn’t happen this year.

“Last year I finished third, and I don’t want that to happen again this year,” he said.

Cousineau was the lone Canadian among a sea of Americans in the top-15. Jesse Marshall of the U.S. finished second with a time of 2:26.48, while his teammate Jeffrey M. Harrison rounded out the podium with a final time of 2:27.10.

“We expect that Julien should be winning here, but it’s hard to win, no matter who is in the field,” said Canadian coach Dusan Grasic. “Cousi has been extremely fast in training and we gave him an opportunity at the start of the season to race World Cup, then go for the overall titles in the CIBC Nor Am slalom and GS.”

More race action is set for Friday. At Mont-Garceau, the women will compete in a giant slalom, and the race can be viewed through live timing via the Alpine Canada Alpin Web site by visiting www.canski.org and clicking on “Results.” At Sunday River, the men will run giant slalom again Friday before shifting to slalom for the weekend.

NARROW MISS FOR EMILIE DESFORGES AT CIBC COUPE NOR-AM CUP IN LAKE LOUISE

Maggie Pattillo, the first racer in the new CIBC Nor Am series
Lake Louise, Alta (December 9, 2002) – Canadian Alpine Development Team skier Emilie Desforges of Montreal was just one one-hundredth of a second away from standing on the podium Monday after the first super-G of the CIBC Coupe Nor Am Cup in Lake Louise.

Competing on the same course that hosted the World Cup men’s and women’s Winterstart events over the last two weeks, Desforges raced to a time of one minute 15.39 seconds, only 0.98 seconds off Kirsten Bybee’s winning time of 1:14.37. The super-G was an American sweep, as Lauren Van Ness finished in second place at 1:14.80 and Bryna McCarty rounded out the top three at 1:15.34.

Bybee, who has won two gold medals in downhill at South American Cups, has never won a Nor Am super-G before today.

Desforges, 19, had an opportunity to preview the racetrack in Lake Louise last weekend when she and her teammates foreran the Audi FIS Ski World Cup Winterstart.

"It was great training for this race, and it was amazing to be out there with the big girls," she said of the world’s best, who descended on the Canadian Rockies for two downhill races and one super-G.

Desforges was satisfied with her result Monday, but couldn’t believe she missed the podium by such a narrow margin.

"I’m happy. It’s a great result for my Nor Am ranking. It’s a little bit frustrating, but it’s fine," she said, "I’ll make it up. I’m going for the win tomorrow."

Women ages 15 and up will race one more super-G Tuesday, and a downhill this weekend as they battle for Nor Am victory and a coveted spot on the World Cup circuit for next year.

Meanwhile, the Canadian male Nor Am contingent wrapped up competition at Beaver Creek, Colorado, with three top 15 finishers in the super-G Monday, with Banff’s Paul Stutz leading the team with a seventh-place finish. The men are headed to the CIBC Coupe Nor Am Cup at Lake Louise where the men’s and women’s downhill training runs begin on Wednesday.
